Newest Street In Key West: Howard England Way
Welcome to one of Key West’s newest street names, Howard England Way. So “Who’s Harry Crumb?”… sorry, that was a 1989 John Candy movie… I meant “Who’s Howard England?”
Having been down this formerly unnamed road dozens of time in the past, the flashy new green sign stuck out like a sore thumb. Being curious of its naming origin I asked the State Park attendant if she knew who Howard English was, “No” she replied, to which I responded “OK then, Do you happen to know who Harry Crumb is?” (I kid you not!)
I hurried back to my home away from home here in Key West promptly asking my aunt & uncle. She quickly said “I believe he helped renovate the fort”. Low and behold after searching him out on the internet she was right. Howard England was a major contributor in the restoration of Key West’s Civil War icon known as Fort Zachary Taylor. And yes, I did go back and tell the State Park attendant.
You can find Howard England Way at the entrance to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park about 4 blocks southwest of Duval Street.
