Shell’s Shell

Coincidence or not? I seem to notice things like this that others wouldn’t and wonder if the person responsible for it was that good of a thinker or just so happened to do it by accident. In this instance I think it’s the latter. Here’s Shell’s shell, the Shell gas station has in front of it a large pink conch shell which is the official symbol of Key West. This is probably tied for the third largest conch shell in the Keys. There are many of this size conch shells spread throughout the entire length of your drive to entice tourist to pull into their establishments...

Pet Sematary By Stephen King?

“El Gato” means “The Cat” in Spanish OK, that was strictly to grab your attention.  Yes, Stephen King was the author of the 1983 Best-Selling book ‘Pet Sematary’ which was then turned into a 1989 Hollywood movie. And NO, this has nothing to do with that movie but everything to do with a pet cemetery. This section of the Big Coppit Key Cemetery is reserved for pets aptly named “Pet Hill”. After your furry loved ones have passed on they can be laid to rest along with other Key West furry friends in this real-life pet cemetery. The...

Key’s Unique Bottle Wall

“Waiter, please bring me a bottle of your finest wine!” This is way too cool, a vintage uniquely shaped bottle wall. I’m always on the lookout for anything odd, unusual, unique, & out-of-place as this. Though part of a personal stone & mortar wall in front of a home, it’s in full view for all to see FREE sitting only a few feet away from the street. To see this ‘Bottle Wall’ go to Mile Marker 62.8 bayside turning onto South Conch Avenue and make the loop 1/2 way around… you can’t miss it. The road is NOT marked with...

Florida’s 1st Millionaire’s Warehouse

It’s TRUE, this is in fact Florida’s first millionaire’s warehouse! Mr. William Curry is credited as being Florida’s first millionaire who just so happened to live here in Key West during the golden age of ‘Wrecking’. Wrecking is the salvage and recovery of goods and vessels that had run aground or sunk. In this building took place the display, storage and sale of those salvaged shipwrecked goods, sometimes by auction. The building began as a general store selling dry goods and other daily needed products. The building’s checkered past has included...

Sunset Pier’s Umbrellas

Umbrellas At Sunset Pier Rising with the sun I struggle to open my eyes while reaching for my pants, shirt and flip-flops. I hopped in my car with only one task in mind. Hugging my Cuban Coffee in one hand and the steering wheel in the other I pass the street sweeper tidying up from the prior nights festivities. Knowing ahead of time I must scoot on down to the pier and snap this photo before the hordes of Paradise Worshipers dawn their sunglasses and belly up to the bar and tables. This multi-colored mind-blowing beauty-fest of scenery I willingly give to you...

LARGEST Mural In The Florida Keys!

Oh My Gosh! Jaw dropping astounding are the only appropriate words for this unexpected pleasure! I promise, you’ll want to add this one to your list! I’ve driven by the front of this marina a thousand times over all the years never knowing it ever existed. Upon turning down a side road and rounding the corner you come up on what is the LARGEST mural in the entire Florida Keys! The mural depicts Caloosa indians engaged in daily activities during their reign of this portion of the keys. This building-long mural dominates the marina only noticing the beautiful scenic ocean view...

Key West’s Historic Presidential Gates

It never ceases to amaze me seeing tourists walk right by such historic sites & plaques never once batting an eye or raising their cameras. What a shame, in this case they would’ve missed this indiscrete one of kind driveway entrance of incredible importance as this Presidential Gate. This gate was built in 1906 and over the years have welcomed Presidents: Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy along with a laundry list of other world-stage dignitaries. They were opened to all of the citizens of Key West, the State of Florida, & the Nation for the first time on March...

Catch You Later!

‘CATCH YOU LATER’ is a direct reference to the sport of fishing in the Florida Keys specifically here in Islamorada which is better known as the ‘Sportfishing Capital Of The World’! Seen below is a sign behind Bud N’ Mary’s Marina located at Mile Marker 79.9 oceanside that echos the “Sportfishing Capital Of The World”! Though the sign itself is relatively hidden, it’s worth walking around the building to get your picture taken with a big fish that you didn’t actually catch but it’s OK to say that you did! (nobody’s going to believe you anyway) You can find...

Cactus In The Keys! (TRUE)

Seeing a cactus has got to be the LAST thing you’d ever think of finding in the Florida Keys, and yet… here it is! Cactus are normally associated with Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, a Saguaro Cactus can weigh 4,800 pound growing up to 60 ft tall with branches that look like arms and live up to 200 years old. OK, that’s their cactus, here’s our Barb Wire Cactus seen to be an astonishing 3 feet tall and yet just as impressive because of its location in the Florida Keys. There are several color-coded paths here with this cactus clearly marked as seen on one of them…...
